Why does this website look like it's from the '90s?

It's because this website is a part of the "smolweb."

Between the years 2017 and 2023, the average internet connection speed ballooned from 30.7 Mbps to 129 Mbps. Despite this amazing advance, the average load time for a webpage on a desktop computer has largely stayed the same.

Much of this is attributable to a corresponding rise in webpage size and resources which need to be downloaded by a browser every time a site is visited. The smolweb is a response. It is a design philosophy that emphasizes functionality over form.

While back-to-roots websites like this will probably never be in vogue again, so far it's been a fun excercise to create one.
